Rolex Air King: The Master Of The New Generation!

Founded by Hans Wilsdorf in London, England in the year 1905, Rolex is a brand that needs no introduction whatsoever. It has created a platform for itself and now stands at one of the most reliable watch makers in the world. Rolex has manufactured a lot of timepieces in the past which have been very successful and to own one of it, would definitely be a privilege for any man or woman.

Rolex History:

Rolex is one of the most prestigious brands of watches the history has ever seen. But how did it get the name “Rolex”? Hans Wilsdorf wanted the name to be simple and easy to remember so that people never forget the brand. It is known that a lot of names were suggested to him but none of the clicked to him. One day, while riding on the upper deck of a horse-drawn omnibus along Cheapside in the City of London, a genie whispered ‘Rolex’ his ear and that instantly drew his mind away. This brought the iconic name “Rolex” into existence.

Air King:

The king of the air - the Rolex Air-King was developed to honor the British fighter pilots during World War II. Like all other models of the collection, the Rolex Air-King is known for an unbeatable combination of classic aesthetic and high practicality. The original Rolex Air-King was designed in the 1950’s and ever since, it was a testament to aviation. Released in the midst of World War II, the Rolex Air-King is the only remaining watch in production from the original “Air Series.” Released in 1945, the Air-King joined the ranks of the Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and Air-Tiger, all created to honor the RAF pilots of the Battle of Britain.

The Rolex Air-King, for most of its very long history, was the simplest, least expensive Rolex watch for men, but also in some ways the purist's Rolex. With no date, a 100 m water resistant case, screw-down crown, and chronometer certification, it had every essential attribute that makes a Rolex a Rolex, with no distractions. For nearly 37 years, the Air-King line remained fairly unchanged. This understated watch, with a dial that was considered to be rather big back in the day, allowed fighter pilots to easily read the time in any situation. Featuring a distinctive design, the Air-King still enjoys great popularity today and is an ideal entry-level model by Rolex.

Basic Features:

Some of the top key factors of the Air King for men are the clean dial and excellent legibility. One of the most unusual factors which were not in previous models is the soft iron inner case around the movement, giving the Rolex Air-King anti-magnetic properties – a feature only shared with the Rolex Milgauss till date. It makes the Air-King a proper pilot’s watch: legible, sporty and resistant to a plane’s cockpit environment. Here are some highlighted features of Air King Watch that will definitely convince you that it is one of the most economical Rolex watch series ever.

Milgauss Case:

Once you have a look at the new Air King model, it will remind you of Rolex Milgauss. It has the same case as of Rolex Milgauss. This means that Air King is also protected against magnetic fields just as the Milgauss. The case and bracelet are made of the famous 904L grade stainless steel and has a beautiful satin finish. A twin locking crown and 100 meter water resistance makes Rolex Air King a powerful watch for men who like to talk with the Air.

Oystersteel:

Steel especially developed by Rolex for this particular series of watches in itself proves the dedication of craft and sense of providing the best to the world that this brand holds. This superalloy is most commonly used in high-technology and in the aerospace and chemical industries, where maximum resistance to corrosion is essential. Oystersteel is extremely resistant and will definitely keep your watch new for the longest period of time when compared to any other water resistant watch of a different brand. This Rolex watch series will keep you going even in the toughest and harshest environmental situations.

Oyster Case and Clasp:

The oyster case was invented and patented by Rolex in 1926 only after their successful “Rolex Oyster” launch. For Rolex, the word Oyster is a symbol as well as a registered trademark. All Rolex Oysters are guaranteed waterproof up to 100 m. This guarantee is extended to 300 m for the Submariner and to 1220 m for the Sea-Dweller, with helium escape valve. The Oyster watches combine extremely sturdy case, with a case back and winding crown, all absolutely waterproof. The Air-King comes on the impeccable Oyster bracelet with a folding Oysterclasp, and is everything you’d expect from a Rolex in terms of comfort.

Air-King Dial:

Some changes are made in the dial of new Air King as far as the looks are concerned. Rolex moved the Air-King logo to the lower part of the dial and also added a lot of Arabic numerals to the dial. Not only the typical ‘Explorer’ lay-out with Arabic 3, 6 and 9’clock markers are on there, the remaining hour markers go from ‘5’ to ’55’. This remarkable dial lay-out is based on a pair of cockpit instruments that Rolex made in 2006 for a special engineering project to get a supersonic car to reach a speed of 1000mp/h on land. It features a distinctive black dial and a prominent minute scale for navigational time readings. It bears the name Air-King in the same lettering that was designed especially for the model in the 1950s. The new Air King is measured 40 mm wide with a polished bezel and solid Oyster caseback making it considerably bigger in size as compared to the previous models. Basically, the dial is the main hero of Air King.

Movement:

The Air-King is equipped with calibre 3131, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 3131 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. Its architecture, in common with all Oyster watch movements, makes it singularly reliable. Besides the soft iron inner case, protecting the movement from magnetic fields, the Calibre 3131 is fitted with a blue paramagnetic Parachrom hairspring which is insensitive to magnetic changes further ensuring precision and reliability while in flight.

Superlative Chronometer Certification:

This exclusive designation testifies that the watch has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, which exceed watchmaking norms and standards. The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer after casing is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer.

Price:

Approximately of Rs.5 Lakh, Rolex Air King for men is definitely a Rolex aimed at a younger audience, people left cold by the classicism of the Oyster and the ubiquity of the Submariner. It’s a fun watch, but also one that honors the brand’s rigorous legacy and traditions. One of the most budget friendly watches Rolex has ever manufactured, Air King is economical as well as a classic.

Conclusion:

The Air-King look is well known, and has become a highly prized collector’s piece. Even though a lot of changes have been made in the Air King since the time it started, still it has not lost its essence and simplistic features that make an Air King an Air King. With high technology, amazing features and extremely fine quality which display impressive workmanship and precision, Rolex Air King for men has justified its name in the world of luxury watches.
